Homestead Exemptions

Generally, a homeowner is entitled to a homestead exemption on their home and land underneath provided the home was owned by the homeowner and was their legal residence as of January 1 of the taxable year. (O.C.G.A. § 48-5-40).

This means you will receive a discount on your property taxes.

Applications must be filed by April 1.

Most counties require your drivers license and car registration reflect the property address.

You may need to file with your county and city.

Annual Property Tax Assessments

Each year, you will receive a notice of your property tax assessment, which tells you how your property taxes are estimated to be. This is a time sensitive document that gets mailed to you or can be found online for most counties.
